End of mission and conclusions
Of course there were still many votes in Central Province to be compiled, many results to be announced. And Central Province is mainly Kikuyu area backing incumbent President Kibaki. The problem is that it took too long for these results in Central Province to be announced. I don't know the reasons of the delay. But it discredited the credibility of the elections as the Mission stated yesterday.
In my opinion the polling and counting were credible but not the compilation at the tally centers and not thetransmision of datas to Nairobi. In some constituencies it took more than 24 hours for the tally center to send the results to the capital. What happened during that time? Unfortunately the observers were already back in Nairobi then. That was a mistake of the European Commission.
I am happy with the Preliminary Statement of our mission. It pointed out these iregularities. Unfortunately this can help to warm the social and political situation even more sincethe supporters of Raila Odinga can find in the Statements more arguments to use non democratic means.
I really did not expect this explosion of rage and violence in Kenya. But this is Africa where politics are still dominated by ethnic questions. Also in a modern and apparently stable country as Kenya.
Now I am back to Europe but with the wish of going back again to the Black Continent.
